چکیده

Thr red colour of many of the soils in the Mediterranean region was the main reason that in the past the broad term “Red Mediterranean soils”, occasionally “terra rossa”, became quite a common indication for all soils in the region (YAALON, 1997). BRESSON (1993) stated that Red Mediterranean soils resulted from a bisiallitic type of weathering with the release of high amounts of iron oxides closely bound to clay minerals. According to FEDOROFF (1997), the bisiallitic type of weathering is not a specific characteristic of Red Mediterranean soils. He also stated that the concept of clay illuviation is not yet unanimously accepted as a leading soil forming process in Red Mediterranean soils. Geochemical Evidence for African Dust and Volcanic Ash Inputs to Terra Rossa Soils on Carbonate Reef Terraces, Northern Jamaica, West Indies

The origin of red or reddish-brown, clay-rich, ‘‘terra rossa’’ soils on limestone has been debated for decades. A traditional qualitative explanation for their formation has been the accumulation of insoluble residues as the limestone is progressively dissolved over time. However, this mode of formation often requires unrealistic or impossible amounts of carbonate dissolution. Therefore, where ...

Influence of Climate on the Iron Oxide Mineralogy of Terra Rossa

-Terra rossa samples were taken from the B horizons of soil profiles and from cracks within limestone in Italy. The average annual temperature (AAT) of the sites ranged from 8.4 to 20.3~ and the average annual precipitation (AAP) from 511 to 3113 mm, with either a 5-6 month water deficit or a large water surplus. Goethite and hematite were identified in all the samples. Under a moist (> 1700 mm...

Investigation of parent magma evolution and origin of chromites in Cheshmeh-Bid, Neyriz, Fars

: Cheshmeh-Bid chromite deposit is located in Nayriz ophiolite, 200 km northeast of Shiraz. The ophiolite sequences in this area are including ultramafic rocks (dunite, harzburgite, and pyroxenite). In this deposit, chromites are located in the mantle-crust transition zone and are enclosed by a dunite cover. Based on chemical studies of the major elements, chromite is depleted of Al and Ti elem...

An outlook on the diversity of polypores shared between Iran and the Mediterranean area

Polypore fungi are an important group of wood-inhabiting basidiomycetes that have significant roles in biomass recycling in forests and woodland ecosystems. Figures on the polypore diversity in Iran have been partly made available through few checklists, but there have been no comparative studies on the pattern of geographic distribution of the species. The prevalence of the Mediterranean biocl...

Mapping the presence of red clay subsoil in the Driftless area of Wisconsin, USA

In the unglaciated parts of Southwestern Wisconsin, buried Terra Rossas are commonly found. These clayey, red soils are buried by loess and mainly found on ridges underlain by limestone. They have been eroded during periglacial climates. The red clay has implications for groundwater recharge as well as lateral flow through the landscape. This project focusses on a 50 km2 watershed where some 40...
